Upcoming Television Adaptation of ‘Death at the White Hart’

Chris Chibnall, renowned for his role as creator of the acclaimed series Broadchurch, is set to bring his literary debut to the screen. His novel, Death at the White Hart, will be adapted for television, courtesy of his production company, Imaginary Friends Productions, in collaboration with Red Planet Pictures.

Production Details

The adaptation has received a green light from ITV’s director of drama, Polly Hill, along with Kevin Lygo, the managing director of media and entertainment at ITV. As the author, Chibnall will both pen the script and serve as executive producer, teaming up with Belinda Campbell from Red Planet Pictures.

Novel Release and Plot Overview

Death at the White Hart is scheduled for release on March 27, 2025. Set against the backdrop of the Dorset village of Fleetcombe, the narrative revolves around the murder of the local pub’s landlord. The story follows Detective Nicola Birdge as she navigates a complex web of deceit and local rivalries to reveal the identity of the killer.

Chibnall’s Vision for the Adaptation

This novel marks the first installment of a two-book deal. Joel Richardson, editor at Michael Joseph, remarked on Chibnall’s storytelling prowess, describing it as an “irresistible story packed with dark secrets, unforgettable characters and a detective who is set to become iconic in the genre.”

Reflecting on the adaptation’s journey to television, Chibnall stated, “Polly’s dynamic vote of confidence in Death at the White Hart made it a no-brainer to bring the novel to the screen with ITV. Within this cliffhanger-packed murder mystery sits a specifically British story about how people live their lives right now. There’s no better home for it than ITV.”

Partnership and Future Plans

Polly Hill also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting, “I think it’s a perfect partnership, and I know the adaptation with Chris at the helm will make an unmissable drama. It’s all the more special for us that Chris returns to Dorset once again with this very British murder, and wonderful new investigation team.”

The adaptation is expected to begin production in the upcoming year, with plans for the series to be broadcast on ITV1 and STV. It will also be available for streaming on ITVX and STV, with international distribution managed by Fremantle.
