Mallory Loehr to Lead Penguin Random House Children’s Books
Mallory Loehr has been named the new president of Penguin Random House (PRH) Children’s Books, set to take over the role in May 2025. She will succeed Barbara Marcus, who is retiring after a distinguished 13-year tenure in the position.
Transition of Leadership
In an internal announcement, Nihar Malaviya, chief executive of PRH, acknowledged Marcus’ notable contributions to the children’s publishing sector. Malaviya characterized her leadership as “robust and remarkable,” highlighting her extensive curiosity and visionary approach that have spurred significant growth within the company.
During Marcus’s leadership, PRH Children’s Books expanded its offerings significantly. Malaviya noted that her keen market insights led to the launch of new imprints and drove increases in various genres including picture books, middle-grade fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, and young adult romance. Additionally, Marcus played a critical role in developing franchises that resonate with consumers.
Barbara Marcus’s Legacy
Prior to her time at PRH, Barbara Marcus was a highly influential figure at Scholastic, where she spent over two decades as president of Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution. In this role, she managed all aspects of children’s book publishing and was pivotal in the acquisition and release of major titles, including the beloved Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Other successful franchises she oversaw include Captain Underpants, The Baby-Sitters Club, and The Magic School Bus.
Looking Ahead
As Mallory Loehr steps into her new role, she aims to continue the momentum established by Marcus and further enhance the reach and appeal of PRH Children’s Books. With a wealth of experience as executive vice-president and publisher at Random House Books for Young Readers Group, Loehr is well-positioned to steer the division into its next chapter.
