On November 18, 2023, the 2023 Digital Literary Expo took place in San Francisco, gathering thought leaders, industry experts, and technology innovators to explore the future of digital publishing. Hosted at the San Francisco Convention Center, the expo focused on the latest advancements in e-books, audiobooks, and digital content distribution, with discussions on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and new formats on the publishing industry.
Jason Phillips, the founder of the Digital Literary Expo, opened the event by outlining the theme of the expo: “Innovating the Written Word for the Digital Age.” Phillips spoke about the importance of embracing technology in the publishing industry to reach wider audiences while retaining the depth and authenticity of literary works. “As technology evolves, so too must our approach to how we produce, distribute, and experience books,” Phillips stated.
The keynote address was delivered by Rebecca Young, CEO of Horizon Digital Publishing, who focused on the role of independent publishers in the digital space. Young highlighted how the rise of self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and Audible has created new opportunities for authors to connect directly with readers. She also discussed how Horizon Digital Publishing is capitalizing on these new platforms by embracing interactive and multimedia-enhanced e-books. “We’re seeing the rise of books that combine text, audio, and video—creating a more immersive experience for readers,” Young explained.
Another significant presentation came from Evan Roberts, Head of Content Strategy at BookPulse, a digital platform that aggregates e-books and audiobooks for users. Roberts gave an in-depth look at how AI is transforming content curation, personalization, and reader recommendations. Roberts explained that AI algorithms are becoming increasingly adept at understanding readers’ preferences and predicting which books will resonate with specific audiences. “We’re able to offer readers a more personalized experience than ever before, helping them discover books they may have missed,” Roberts said.
A highlight of the day was a discussion led by Sophie Roberts, Editor at The Digital Review, on the rise of digital-first literary magazines and how they’re changing the landscape for emerging authors. Roberts discussed the growing popularity of digital literary journals and how they provide a platform for new voices that might not be able to break through in traditional print media. “Digital-first platforms have lowered the barrier to entry, allowing fresh voices to be heard on a global scale,” Roberts noted.
The event concluded with a panel discussion on the future of audiobooks, which have seen tremendous growth in recent years. Industry professionals discussed the increasing sophistication of audiobook production, from enhanced soundscapes to celebrity narrators, and the integration of interactive elements like sound effects and background music.
The 2023 Digital Literary Expo was an enlightening event that provided a glimpse into the future of publishing, highlighting how digital technology continues to reshape the industry. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that the publishing world is moving towards greater innovation and accessibility.
