Cambridge University Press Launches Review of Open Research Publishing
Addressing the Current Challenges in Research Publishing
Cambridge University Press (CUP) has announced a transformative initiative aimed at reassessing the open research publishing framework. This review seeks to rectify what CUP describes as a “broken landscape” in scholarly publishing.
Goals of the Review
The primary objective of this comprehensive review is to identify innovative and feasible solutions that meet the needs of researchers while ensuring sustainability for stakeholders involved in academic publishing.
To facilitate this process, CUP invites participation from a wide array of voices in the academic community, including:
- Researchers
- Librarians
- Publishers
- Funding organizations
- Publishing partners
Framework of Evaluation
Supported by Shift Insight, an independent research consultancy, CUP’s review will focus on four critical areas essential for the evolution of open research:
- The relationship between publishing, reward, and recognition
- Equity in research dissemination
- Research integrity
- The impact of technological change on future publishing models
Project Timeline and Engagement
A detailed report outlining the challenges and proposing actionable solutions will be released in the summer. CUP emphasizes the importance of continuous engagement within the academic sphere to implement the necessary reforms that will expedite change in academic publishing.
Perspectives from Leadership
Mandy Hill, the managing director of CUP, highlighted the urgency of the initiative, stating, “We have made significant progress towards becoming a fully open publisher, but something is still broken in the current landscape.” She further emphasized that without significant changes, existing models could become unsustainable and fail to support research in a rapidly evolving technological environment.
Dr. Jessica Gardner, University Librarian at the University of Cambridge, reiterated the institution’s dedication to open research practices, asserting that they are fundamental to Cambridge’s mission for high-level contributions to society. She stated, “Drawing on our belief in collaboration and discussion, Cambridge is well-placed to help convene ideas from a diversity of voices and specialisms to help shape our commitment to a more sustainable and equitable open research future.”
